The China Construction Industry Association recently announced that the SOYO I combined-cycle power plant construction and installation project, undertaken by China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), has won the Luban Prize, China’s top award for construction engineering, in the overseas project sector.

A waste-to-energy power plant located in the industrial park of circular economy in Tongzhou district of Beijing, which was built by the Fourth Construction of China Machinery Industry Co Ltd, won the prize as well, as a national quality project.

The two subsidiaries of Sinomach did credit to the company’s annual report card of 2020, and the honors once again testified to the comprehensive strength of the company in the field of engineering and construction. Sinomach appears frequently on prize-winner lists.

The SOYO I combined-cycle power plant, located in Angola, is the first large thermal power plant in the country, with the total installed capacity of 750 megawatts. It accounts for 10 percent of Angola’s installed capacity already in use.

The plant has been in good condition since its operation and was well received by the governments of both China and Angola along with all sectors of society. The president of Angola and many government officials spoke highly of CMEC’s high quality construction services and its commitment to ensuring the smooth completion of the plant during their inspections.

In June 2020, the project was awarded the 2020 China Electric Power Quality Engineering Award, China’s highest honor for project quality in the power construction industry.

The plant has alleviated local power shortages and benefited more than half of the people in Angola, injecting a powerful impetus into the country’s economic development and improving its people’s livelihoods.

The project in Beijing’s Tongzhou district has a daily waste disposal capacity of 2,250 tons, an annual waste incineration capacity of 750,000 tons, and an annual power generation capacity of 200 million kilowatt-hours. It can fulfill the electricity consumption of about one-third of the households in the district.

The project aims at the integrated treatment of domestic waste through reduction, reuse and recycling. It is expected to save burning of nearly 100,000 tons of standard coal and reduce nearly 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

It has become a highly modern landmark building which serves the national strategy and people’s wellbeing and symbolizes energy conservation and environmental protection.

Sinomach, a leading central enterprise in high-end equipment manufacturing and a front-runner of China’s machinery and equipment technology, has been making unceasing efforts to boost the further development of the Belt and Road Initiative, and contributing to the national strategy and economic growth through international business development and quality enhancement.

The Luban Prize, also known as the China Construction Engineering Luban Prize (National Prime-quality Project), is the highest honor for construction quality in China’s construction industry.

The prize is awarded every two years and sets strict rules for candidate construction projects, which should be newly constructed or extension projects that have been completed and put into operation in China.
